PhD scholarship in extragalactic astrophysics (NCN project: Dusty Giants)

The National Centre for Nuclear Research (NCBJ) invites applications for doctoral scholarships in the project „DUSTY GIANTS: How galaxies produce and destroy dust in different environments”. The position is funded by the National Science Centre through the grant SONATA 2020/39/D/ST9/00720 (PI: dr. Darko Donevski). The position is intended for candidates with a background in astronomy, physics, or related technical disciplines.

Project Dusty Giants aims at understanding how the cosmic-web environments influence the evolution of dusty galaxies in the distant Universe. The successful candidate will study this topic by exploring big multiwavelength observational data sets, and the state-of-the-art simulations. One of the expected outcomes will be a new technique for characterising the evolution of galaxy dust properties over cosmic time. The project intends to provide the solid ground needed for interpreting future unprecedented data sets of galaxies in the distant Universe obtained through synergy of ground-based submillimetre instruments (i.e., ALMA, NOEMA, JCMT) and space telescopes (i.e., JWST).

The successful candidate will have an opportunity to work within an international team of researchers and to participate in numerous international conferences and schools. Collaborative research stays abroad are anticipated. The doctoral candidate will take an active part in the scientific life within the NCBJ Astrophysics group (journal clubs, seminars and outreach activities). Leadership and/or active role in telescope proposals will be strongly encouraged.

The position is available for a maximum of 4 years. After the end of the project, doctoral school students will receive a doctoral scholarship in accordance with Article 209 of the Act on Higher Education and Science of 20 July 2018. There will be an additional generous budget for research travels and equipment. 

Location and the institute:
Astrophysics division within the NCBJ (https://old.ncbj.gov.pl/bp4) is fast-growing group that currently consists of 30 researchers. Members of the group are involved in many international collaborations and observational galaxy surveys (e.g., HELP, LSST, Euclid, LOFAR). Astrophysics division is located in Pasteura 7 street, in the center of historical city of Warsaw. Warsaw is one of the most important scientific hotspots in the central Europe, and is known for its vibrant urban and art scene.

Requirements:

• MSc college degree in physics/astronomy, application of computers in physics/astronomy, or a similar specialisation;
• Good command of written/spoken English;
• Good knowledge of at least one programming language using for data analysis (preferably Python); 
• Involvement in scientific research; good analytical, communication and teamwork skills;

• Copy of college diploma: for graduates of Polish universities this is the Master's degree, for others it is the degree required as a prerequisite for a PhD degree in the country where it was awarded,
• Complete list of college exams and marks.

Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed. The date of the interview will be individually e-mailed to each invited applicant. The recruitment process will be finished on May 16th, 2021. After this step, the successful candidate has to apply and qualify (pass the entrance exam) for doctoral studies at NCBJ Graduate School. The doctoral position is expected to start in October 2022.
