Get in touch with nuclear reactor, ionizing radiation, and mysteries of the Universe
2015.09.15 13:57 - adminNCBJ participates in organization of this year 19th edition of Science Festival in Warsaw. Events of the Festival Warsaw will start on Saturday, September 19, 2015. We have prepared a number of lectures (in Polish), workshops, excursions and scientific shows presenting selected topics of research conducted in our Institute, which (we hope) will be interesting for both youth and adults. Our employees will tell you what methods are used to study radiation emitted by nuclei, how scientists are trying to reveal genesis of our Universe, or how the largest research facilities on Earth are being developed/constructed. All interested are invited to attend our events organized in the Warsaw University Physics Faculty building at 5, Pasteura str. in Warsaw, and to participate in an excursion to Świerk.
Possibility to sightsee MARIA, the sole nuclear reactor operated in Poland is a very attractive opportunity. Two specially marked busses will depart from the entrance to Technology Museum (Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw) to Świerk at 8.30 am and 9.30 am on September 22 and 23. Total excursion time (including return trip by our bus to Warsaw, both trips free of charge) about 4 hours. For security reasons only Polish citizens of age 11 or more are eligible. Each buss can take about 50 people served on the “first came first served” basis. In Świerk each prospective visitor will have to present an ID with his/her photo. Visitors will be shown/lectured how nuclear reactors are operated, what are reactor safety measures, what are major application fields for ionizing radiation, what perspectives will be opened up when the first nuclear power plant in Poland becomes operational.
Other events organized by NCBJ in the Warsaw University Physics Faculty building at 5, Pasteura str. in Warsaw include:
- Event 42. Workshop on looking for Higgs boson among signals acquired by the CMS detector operated at LHC accelerator in CERN (Tuesday, September 22, 6 pm, instructor: Maciej Misiura; limited number of places, pre-registration on the “first came first served” basis required).
- Events 323, 324, 325, 326, 327 Series of shows/lectures presenting properties and applications of ionizing radiation, simulated start-up of a nuclear reactor, shows for kids (Saturday, September 26, starting 9.30 am).
- Event 328. Lecture on the world of elementary particles (Saturday, September 26 at 10 am, dr Małgorzata Kazana).
- Event 329. Lecture on quark/gluon plasma i.e. our Universe in its very early stage of evolution (Saturday, September 26, 11 am, dr Bożena Boimska).
- Event 330. Lecture “Might it be that ionizing radiation is just necessary for life?” (Saturday, September 26, noon, Professor Ludwik Dobrzyński).
- Event 331. Lecture on dark matter ((Saturday, September 26, 1 pm, dr Paweł Przewłocki and Katarzyna Frankiewicz, MSc).
- Event 332. Lecture on the time's arrow (Saturday, September 26, 2 pm, Marcin Paweł Sadowski).
