Mathematical models for the power industry

NCBJ Department of Complex Systems (DUZ) in cooperation with the PSA S.A. company (operator of the Polish power transmission system) is inviting persons interested in mathematical modelling to apply for a 2-month summer employment. Students are welcomed. The job objective is to develop some models for the power industry in at least one of the below specified fields:

  • ge­ne­ration/transmission/distribution/international trading of electric energy, mo­de­ls of power flows in power grids
  • power supply security/blac­ko­ut risk
  • forecasts for power mix in Poland and in neighbouring countries.
  • energy production costs/prices on energy markets/inter-zone trading volumes (using the Mar­ket Co­upling algorithm).

We offer an unique opportunity to conduct interdisciplinary research in close touch with the world of business. Additionally, results of a high importance to society could be immediately applicable.

Job location: War­sa­w

Detailed requirements:

  • motivation to very deeply understand the to-be-modelled system
  • knowledge or motivation to acquire knowledge on power grids (po­wer flow, opti­mal po­wer flow) or on other topics from the above mentioned fields
  • programmer skills (pre­fer­red languages: Ma­tlab, Py­thon)

Additional assets:

  • knowledge of rules according to which energy markets function
  • familiarity with economy of power markets.

  • an assignment contract worth about 2400 PLN gross/month
  • after 2 months trial period the best candidates will be offered a part-time permanent employment
