The National Center for Nuclear Research (NCBJ) is one of the bigest research institutes in Poland. Wide research activity takes place at NCBJ, especially basic research in nuclear physics and related fields, reactor research and development of nuclear fuel, safety of nuclear installations and many others.

NCBJ opens a competition at the Fundamental Research Department, Astrophysics Division for the position of

Post-doc

Work location: ul. 28 Pułku Strzelców Kaniowskich 69,  Łódź, Poland

The successful candidate will work in the team of our division for the project „Search for macroscopic dark matter by the ground-based and space-based high sensitivity cameras”, National Science Centre (NCN), Poland, OPUS19 grant No. 2020/37/B/ST9/01821. In the framework of the JEM-EUSO (Joint Experiment Module for Extreme Universe Space Observatory) and the DIMS (Dark Matter and Interstellar meteoroid Study) collaborations, the main task is development of the data processing software for the Mini-EUSO and for the DIMS experiments. The former employs an ultra-fast UV-sensitive prototype detector for the future ultra-high energy cosmic ray (UHECR) observation from orbit. Since 2019, the regular operation has been carried out on the International Space Station to monitor the night atmosphere for the light emitting events. The latter adopts multiple high sensitivity video cameras on the ground to monitor the night sky to mainly search for the meteors with interstellar origin. As soon as circumstances allow, we plan to install the DIMS cameras at the Telescope Array UHECR observatory in Utah, USA. This project aims at searching a large amount of data from these experiments for possible macroscopic dark dark matter initiated events and studying the background events like meteors. In addition to those with experience in astroparticle physics, candidates with advanced knowledge on informatics, computer science etc. or with experience in the video observations of meteors are also encouraged.

The candidate is expected:

  • to have PhD degree in the field of informatics, computer science, astroparticle physics or astronomy for no longer than seven years
  • to have Fluent English speaking and writing skills for research activities in the international collaborations

Additional assets:

  • Specialised knowledges and experience on processing a large amount of data of for astroparticle physics, favourably for space-based or balloon-based UHECR experiments or similar, or analyzing a large amount of videos data for astronomy particularly for meteor observations
  • Specialised knowledges on computer science and modern programming languages
  • Experience in lectures or/and supervising the student in informatics or computer science that is also expected in this project

We offer:

  • Opportunity to conduct research activity in Mini-EUSO and DIMS experiments
  • Participation to the relevant activities in the JEM-EUSO and DIMS collaborations including the installation and operations of the DIMS cameras in Utah
  • Contract for one year with a possibility of extension     (conditions may be referred to the above links)

Documents required:
