Search for gravitational waves in the Advanced LIGO/Irgo detectors data
2016.01.11 11:23 - adminSome methods to search for optical transitions related to candidates for gravitational waves in data acquired by the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Irgo detectors will be presented. The Advanced LIGO detector started operations in 2015, finish of its first scientific run is planned for the end of January 2016. The Advanced Virgo detector is expected to kick off in 2016. By the end of this decade both detectors should reach sensitivity sufficient to detect gravitational waves (arXiv:1304.0670).
Some astrophysical processes may give rise to simultaneous emission of both electromagnetic and gravitational waves (e.g. explosion of a supernovae or collision of two neutron stars). The LSC-Virgo scientific collaboration jointly with their astronomical partners has started the EM Follow-up project. The project’s primary goal is to look for optical transitions related to candidates for gravitational waves. The Pi of the Sky team (partly from NCBJ) has reached with LSC-Virgo a MOU in the matter of participation in the EM Follow-up project (2015-2017).
